Time

What is the best possible thing you could receive from someone as a gift?

Time.

It’s simple. I sat here racking my brain trying to figure out exactly what it is I’d want or need. I’ve been asked that question so many times over the years in many different ways for so many reasons, birthdays, Christmas, Mother’s Day, you name it. It’s always the same… “What do you want for…?”

As each event cycles back around, I do my level best to have a list ready for them because, quite frankly, when the question comes, my brain freezes. I have no answer for them. It’s easy throughout the year to dream, and drool over things I enjoy. That list is infinite. Books, crayons, sketch paper, yarn, books, stamps, ink, magnets…. Did I mention books? If the list is infinite, then WHY do I draw a complete blank when asked that question?

My answer? Time! See… I’ve lived a lifetime in a short time, and realized that “time” is the only thing we truly have that we can give that shows another person what they mean to us. Not only that, the time we have is finite. Fleeting. The jewels we have inside of us. The things that didn’t cost in monetary but in sweat, blood and tears…. Joy, laughter, and life! No one can “see” these gifts. Unless we choose to share them. If we don’t share them in the “time” we have, they wind up the “-“ on a marker somewhere.

The “things” that I want or need are just that. They can be lost, damaged, burned down. The list can go on, obviously. But the legacy people leave with you, as you get to know them… through the “time” spent with them… That becomes a part of you. That gift to me is priceless.
